SPORTS: Nelson Prepares For New Softball Season
Softball season is right around the corner, and no one is more excited to start than senior captain Melissa Nelson.
Last year, the Law softball team ended the season with a record of 5-15. The Lady Lawmen hope to improve on that record with the help of Nelson this year.
Nelson plays softball almost all year. When she isn’t playing for Law, she is playing for the Stratford Breakers. The Breakers is a travel softball and college exposure team. The Breakers will help Nelson be seen by colleges and will hopefully place her at a school.
Last season, Nelson played half of the year at her normal position shortstop, and the other half of the year at catcher.
At the end of her junior year, Nelson was named All-State for the first time and All-SCC for the second year in a row. Then she was chosen to be captain for her senior year along with senior Lea Finch.
“Melissa is a great example of a dedicated captain,” said junior Sam Murphy. “She has been working hard in the off season and she deserves to be a captain this year.”
Nelson has high hopes for this season. They want to make the playoffs this season and improve on their record from last year.
“I think this will be a really good season,” said Nelson. “We are returning a lot of players from last year and many players have worked on their game in the off season.”
Nelson is looking to play softball at the college level. She has not chosen a school yet but is considering Springfield College or Fairleigh Dickinson University.
Softball season starts on March 19 with the first day of tryouts, and the first game is scheduled for April 4.
