A game between an 0-8 team and a 7-1 team might seem like a mismatch in most situations, but the Law girls basketball team proved that the record didn’t tell the full story.
Law defeated Amity at home on Tuesday 51-47 to earn their first win of the year. Law not only gave Amity their second loss of the year, but took revenge for a loss earlier this season.
“We were able to win because we worked together as one unit,” said senior captain Catie Miller.
The game began with a defensive stalemate where neither team put points on the board within the first few minutes of the game. As the first quarter came to a close, Law led 12-9.
Amity seemed to be poised to break the game wide open as they went up by as many as seven points, but a huge run out Law up 30-26 at halftime. Law continued its pattern of huge scoring streaks by taking the lead at the close of the third quarter thanks to two quick scores by junior Jenna Bernard.
The intensity continued into the fourth quarter with Sam Murphy hitting one of only two Law three-pointers to establish a lead in the closing minutes. Amity made the game 46-45 with 50 seconds to go, but Law ultimately closed out the game to win for the first time this year.
“We were missing a mix of consistent offensive and defensive play in our previous games,” said Miller. “We had been playing one side of the ball very well, and the other only halfway.”
Freshman Laura Dulin led the team with 16 points and three steals. Her performance also earned her an award for being the High School Sports Star of that day on the New Haven Register website.
Other notable performances came from Murphy, who had 12 points, Bernard, who had 6, and Miller, who had 5.
The Lady Lawmen now move to play Guilford on Friday before they play their first of two matchups against the rival Foran Lions, who are currently 4-6.
